Pinterest in the Dining Room

I’ve been feeling a tad “blah” the past few days, so how’s about indulging me in a little Pinspiration, m’kay? Thanks. I knew you’d understand.

Let me introduce you to Red Riding Hood. Er. Red Dining Room. Our dining room is a small-ish box of a space. We inherited the red walls. Wait, okay, actually we inherited purple-red walls. To see if we could live with them (in a slightly less Barney fashion), we purchased some crimson paint several years back and slapped it up there. It toned down the purple, but the red’s still there in all of its BAM, POW, SMACK glory.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

That iPhone picture makes it look more purple, but it is actually burgundy red. The table set was something we purchased a year and a half ago (and put together last July 4th when we were trying to get the baby to make his arrival). We like it very much, along with the awesome vintage sidebar under the window (which we purchased on our honeymoon; how’s that for a story?) and the ladder-style bookshelf to the right. Can’t even see it, huh?

There’s also a set of windows to the right of this shot, and some large art in a rustic frame to the left. It’s a darn near impossible room to take pictures of thanks to a) its size and b) the weird built-ins (see the white on the left and right of the shot?) which go halfway up the wall and create a doorway into the room.

I know the first step will be to finally paint the walls a color that wasn’t all the rage in 1995. Not that there’s anything wrong with 1995. Okay, there was; colors, patterns, and some fashions were questionable. So, yeah, I’ve been considering greiges (beige + gray = the awesomest neutral at the moment). At the same time, it’s the first time in recollection that Dave disagrees. He likes the red, and encourages friends and family to agree when they visit. Ha. Not gonna work, buddy. There’s no way I’m going to ever sell this house with a red dining room, and if I’m going to paint it for some future owner to enjoy, why can’t I enjoy it while I’m here? Good reasoning, I think.

While we’re at it, the trim needs a coat or two of the bright semi-gloss white the rest of the house has. Why people paint their trim a dirty shade of cream, I’ll never know. I know I’ll be relieved when that procrastinated project is finished. I may be even more relieved when the rug is gone. It was a cheap, on-sale find, but just isn’t our style anymore…if it ever was.

So, while keeping the aforementioned warm, medium-dark furniture (and books and art, at least to see if they work), we will then have a clean slate of greige + white trim. Here are some finds that inspire me enough to want to pick up a paintbrush (whether they’d work in our dining room or not):

My faves? The drum pendant lighting (we actually put in the chandy we currently have, but it’s a tad too traditional; although I have a feeling it would help sell the house down the line better than a drum…we live in a traditional area) and the geometric curtains rock my socks off. I like our current cheap-o white curtains, but the room is asking for a little suntin’ suntin’.

There are parts of this room that I’m not in love with, but for the most part it suits a small space wonderfully. The upholstered chairs flanking each end are pretty darn rad, and a mirror helps broaden the space (I need me some of that), plus the lighting fixture is purdy. Downright purdy.

Okay, so this isn’t an entire dining room, but it gives me an idea. Check out the gold…and do you see the accent color? Yep, reddy pinky PURPLE. Like the purple monstrosity we began with! Anyone else think it would be a sweet homage — like saying “Let’s still be friends” and actually staying friends? — to the ugliness we started this project with to throw in a few accents of this pretty-in-its-own-way color? I guess I don’t mind it as a hit here and there, but to engulf the walls or rug…ick.

(Oh, and there’s some “Keep Calm and Carry On” art on the wall. Love that.)

Speaking of rugs…while I’d like to get one a tad more modern (since we’ll be using it in any future dwellings, too), this style would work for a few reasons. a) It’s just modern enough without going crazy, making it a good transitional piece that wouldn’t stick out in our 1925 home, b) the cats SHOULD leave it alone…should, and c) the deep tone (with walls exactly that color) grounds the room superbly. Side note: I SO want to DIY that fixture. I’m also flip-flopping — orchidy purple-ish or fun mustard yellow? Drats.

So, there are just a few ideas for our lovely little dining room. That Pinspiration almost makes me want to pick up some paint…almost. I foresee it being my just-around-Christmas project. (In the past, we tend to take on vast painting projects…you got it…just around that busy time of the year. We so crazy.)

I Put a Bird On It – Chair Makeover

I’ve been sitting on this post for quite awhile…pun intended.

*crickets chirp*

Okay, on with the show. I purchased this chair so long ago that I’m not positive whether it was a Goodwill or a Salvation Army find. (My money’s on SA since our Goodwill rarely has good furniture and even more rarely has “older” pieces like this. It has great decor stuff and Target hand-me-downs, but its furniture is miss…with the infrequent hit here or there.) So, yeah, let’s go with SA, which means it was less than $20…and it may very well have been less than $10. I kid you not.

The cushion was either worn to the foam or just had really strange (also worn) fabric. Either way, there appeared to be holes, quite possibly from someone’s ciggy. This thing was C-L-A-S-S-I-C. I fought with myself whether to paint the wood or not, but it was so dinged here and there that I just had to go with it.

Sexy, amiright?

I won’t get into all the gory details. The “body” of the piece was just a sand, prime, paint deal. Folks often have a hard time with the seat, however, so here’s a quick visual on how I did it. Seriously, easy peasy. I mean, if I can do it, you can do it.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Figure out where the fabric will look best from the front, then flip it over.
(I also put a layer of batting under the fabric.)
Start by stapling the middle of each side – at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock – pulling taught but not too tight as you go.
(Too tight would mean bunching panty lines, if you know what I mean.)

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Continue with the edges, then finally the corners.
Ah, the dreaded corners.
There are several ways to do this, but this time I stapled until there was a bunch of fabric leftover, then stapled that down…if that makes sense. You can also do it in a “gift” way or a 90-degree angle, stapling the other side over. Really, there’s no wrong way as long as you can’t tell from the front.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Here’s the finished look from underneath.
Hot mess, right?
That’s okay, no one will see it.
*wink*
It’s just between us.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Tada! Nice and taught.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Sorry for such a harsh shot. Blame it on the atrocious red dining room. Or the blogger. Either works.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

There, that’s a little better. Dappled sun and all.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Aaaand…a gratuitous cute shot. Winston couldn’t allow a camera to go off without his getting in the shot, and apparently Hadley thought Winston could use a kiss at that very moment. #summerblogging #winstondoeslikehim #noreally

Notice that purdy, purdy fabric? And the birds? See? I finally jumped on the birdie bandwagon (two years after it died, it seems). And to think, I finally got some chevron, and it’s on the baby’s sheets. He’s cooler than Mama.

Whatchya think? Does it work? Oh, and it now lives in our front porch. I’d love to put it in the living room, but I need a comfier “Mom needs a moment” armchair. Especially since the current one has a shredded-to-pieces slipcover (Thank. You. Cats.) which I’m pretty sure has gotten through to the chair underneath. Madness, I tell you.

Art!

YI’ve been looking around for some ways to freshen up the ol’ walls around here. Since the bathroom is starting to look more “done” than “in the midst of chaos” I threw some paint onto a canvas (something I’d pinned from here awhile back) that coordinates with the shower curtain.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image-1388773157 on https://megactsout.com

Here’s the art; kind of an ikat/modern type thing…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image-933057286 on https://megactsout.com

By the way, since our easel was in the basement (and I did this project during nap time), I used a couple of glasses to dry the piece. Use what ya got!

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image--83009369 on https://megactsout.com

Now I’ve hit a wall. Namely, our bedroom wall(s). The space over our bed is sparse, and the room is small, so I don’t want a headboard. I’m scoping out some headboard alternatives…

Maybe a DIY headboard with a low profile, or just some fun mirrors?
Or some more art (perhaps three canvasses) in gray, white and navy (and maybe a touch of chartreuse). It could be similar to the ikat I’ve got going on in the bathroom (ie the above style) or something simpler and more graphic, like stripes…maybe.

Or perhaps some subtler, more earthy/botanical/natural art?

Opinions? You know me; I suck at making up my mind, and the hubs doesn’t seem to have much of an opinion on this stuff most of the time.

And then there’s the wall opposite out bed. I’ve had these clearance pieces from TJ Maxx (less than a buck a piece!) for a couple of years, but they’re not working for me anymore. (Dave thinks they’re fine.) The tv and honking dresser are no help, but they’re kind of unavoidable.
Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image--1369361119 on https://megactsout.com

Still doing some searching to figure out what to do there. One huge art piece? (A huge art piece over the bed, then two smaller over here?) Or something more sculptural?

Plus, DANG do I have to start taking better pictures. Stupid iPhone.

Anyhoo, yeah. Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot, guys!!

Handmade Birthday Party

Hey, folks! Things are well under way for a super duper first birthday for our little monkey this Saturday. I’m still working on putting together certain finishing touches and last minute food (going for freshy fresh), but thought I’d share some of the decorations I’ve whipped up for the special day. After all, what says “We love you, buddy!” more than handmade stuff?

First of all, I’m hoping to hang several sizes of poufs around my mom’s carport ceilings, if I can get up that high. Otherwise, I’ve seen them strewn on tables, which will look cool, too. They are currently, however, sitting in plastic bags awaiting their transport to the party place. So, you’ll have to wait to see a picture of the whole set-up, in case you don’t already know what a “pouf” is. Well, there are a couple meanings, but ANYhoo…segue!

Ahem, speaking of hanging, I also cut up some triangles for a few pennant banners to reuse year after year. Eco, baby! And cute, at that! Oh, and the effort in this one might’ve been futile, but I made a felt birthday crown with my expert sewing skills. (snicker) There’s a 50/50 chance the kid’ll wear it, but I can snip the “1” off and put on other numbers or a star for next year. Try, try again! 🙂

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image-1203297860 on https://megactsout.com

Details, details. I’ve done up some little cards with facts about Hadley’s birthday (like what famous people share it) for fun. I also whipped up some “time capsule” forms that folks can fill in for Hadley to read on his 18th birthday. Hopefully I can find room for all this stuff!

We even have a mini “banner” for the smash cake, which I totally eyeballed and am shocked that came out so sweet. Aww. Again, hope to use it next year, and the next, and the next…. Oh, and I yarn-wrapped the “H,” which will probably find its way into Had’s room.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image--1873518199 on https://megactsout.com

The last non-food homemade goodie we made for the day is THE BEST. And, of course, who made it? The dorky daddy, himself. Yup. He’s my very own personal director, cinematographer, editor, etc., so with plenty of tears, he spliced together a full year’s worth of pictures and videos, boiling it down to just over 14 minutes of bittersweet memories. So. Emotional!

Out little monkey is a big boy! He’s even taken his first few steps over the last week or so. Sigh. These first birthday celebrations are as much about the fact that the parents survived the first year as they are about the baby (not that the day is about us — it’s 100% him).

So, that being said, off to work on the food! Can’t wait to share how it all goes. (Side note: I’m a tad anxious about it as if it was a tiny wedding. Is that weird??)

Hooray, We Can Spray!

I am woman, hear me roar!!! Last Sunday while Dave met up with some buddies and the baby took a super long nap (haaaaalleluiah!!), I finally hooked up our diaper sprayer. This thing is gonna make those poopy cloth diapers a breeze to handle! I am so excited about the prospect of spraying poop, it’s insane!!

So, this is what I found after opening up the package and surveying all before me. Pretty straight-forward, although the package’s touting that one didn’t need tools to install it was, um, dead wrong. No tools, my butt.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image--231620306 on https://megactsout.com

No, the floor isn’t 100% done yet. We’re getting there.

If you ever find yourself installing a diaper sprayer, here are a few tips:

– Clean your toilet first. Big time. This is for your own comfort since, depending on the space you’re working in, you may be getting quite intimate with your potty. I know I did. Plus, it’s easier to admire your handiwork when you’re done if it’s all clean.
– Follow the directions, but use your instinct. They were pretty simple but there was half a page that I zoned out over and ended up skipping. Forge ahead as did our forefathers and you’ll be fine.
– Flush when done. The hose area you use to connect everything may make a weird hissing noise. I started to get nervous and thought, “Aw, hellz no. There’s no way we can sleep listening to that all night.” Nerve-inducing, I’d say. But after a flush or two, the noise went away and I sighed a breath of, well, success. Y’know, the “woohoo, I did it, go me, I’d happy dance if it wouldn’t wake the baby” type of moment.

So, here’s my trophy. Int she purdy?? I’d like to thank my stepfather (who’s a plumber) for the years of observation on the workings of the ol’ john and the confidence from it, and, of course, the little man for the super long nap.
Now gimme one of those nasty 3-times-a-day blowouts you’re so know for! (What can I say? He’s teething.)

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image blogger-image-1855011906 on https://megactsout.com

And a close-up of the magic… You can adjust the amount of water coming through, which totally brings back memories of French class. Bidets were a hot topic before we headed out on our trip to Europe.

Let’s Get This Party Started

With officially T minus one month ’til the Hadman turns the big O-N-E, I was politely reminded by the hubs that he’d be happy to pick up the invitations at Staples while he’s out in the “big city” Friday. Oops. I had them done, just needed to do some tweaking and send them in. Thanks for the save, Dave!

I’m a big fan using the Staples online print resource since I utilized it to print the theater’s programs when I used to design them. I found that they came out professionally and timely, with no directors sweating over one of those super long staplers putting together a handful of photo-copied programs to hand to audiences as they arrived on opening night. Yeah, that was never fun. So, paying for Staples was well worth the investment.

I’ve used them for everything from ALL of our print needs for our wedding (invitations, yes, but all the little signs and labels for each table and programs that never got handed out…lots and lots and lots of printing) to baby shower invitations for my sis to the art on Hadley’s wall. It was a no-brainer to use them again.

(By the way, this is not a sponsored post. I wasn’t paid by Staples to brag about ’em. It’s kinda sad that I have to say that.)

Here’s the invitation I whipped up (sans my mom’s address and my phone number for the RSVP) with a little Pinterest inspiration…Pinspiration? Ew…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

So, how much did the invites cost to send out? I scaled them to fit four to a page (cheapskate…no, really, the invitation envelopes we had on hand only fit that size, so it was serendipitous in a really lame way), so all we would need were three sheets. Ha! Three sheets to the wind. Nice.

Anyhoo, yeah, three. Since we were mostly inviting families and couples (with a few awesome exceptions), it wasn’t like we needed 22 separate invites; just one for my sis and her family, one for Dave’s bro and his wife, etc. So, twelve would work just fine.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Check it! I may still get 10% or so off, but I’d say $5.37 for very cool (if I do say so myself) invitations, including the cost of envelopes (totally free) and the fact that I chose stiffer card stock (that’s what she said), is pretty good. Add a few bucks for postage and we’re still coming in at a decent price. If I hadn’t “splurged” and had them do the cutting (way straighter than my shaky hand), it would’ve been $2 cheaper. I know. My Depression-era ancestors would be disappointed in me. *hangs head*

We’re purchasing some other stuff for this shindig, but also doing plenty hand-made options, too. Here’s a breakdown:

Purchasing:
– Pizza, beverages, and several other “some assembly required” food items to make life a tad easier (do carrot sticks count?)
– Cupcakes (but this has a sentimental pitch to it; we’re buying them from the same place that made our wedding cupcakes…so there. Neener neener.)
– A few decorative items, like birthday hats (for fun) from Target
– Gifts for the monkey, himself! 🙂

Making:
– Pom-pom decorations No. More. Wire. HANGERS!!! Only insert “BALLOONS!” for “wire hangers.”
– A pendant banner
– The birthday boy’s crown, which he’ll wear all of two seconds. Tops.
– His healthy smash cake (along with a bit of decoration)!!!

Already Have On Hand:
– This awesome thing we like to call “Pandora”…because it’s called Pandora. We listen to it on our phones all the time, so it only makes sense to use it as a bit of background music. The little one likes the Simon and Garfunkel channel, but we may switch it up to something a wee less depressing.
– A laptop (or possibly burned DVD) to show Daddy’s video for the birthday boy
– Borrowed pop-up tent thingamajiggers just in case of inclement weather. But, seriously, (sung as Streisand), DON’T RAIN ON MY PARADE (party)!!!
– Cake stands. Seriously. We’ve got a million of ’em. A cute HUGE one that our friends Laurel and Jim gave us which has some really cool polka dot textures on it, a couple of antique glass ones we used for our wedding reception, etc. And while I may use them for cupcakes, it sometimes makes for some visual interest to put something less expected on them. How fancy, pizza on a cake stand! Oooohhhh, la-dee-dah!

I’m sure I’m forgetting something. I started taking some notes on my phone, but have yet to make the mother of all to-do/to-buy lists.

We’ve already had an offer or two to help with food (and anything else we may need). You can always tell your best friends when they’re as concerned about your own sanity as they are spending time with your cutey patootey. And when that best friend happens to be your sister, well, all is right with the world.

So, we’re officially in party mode (with the exception of being bogged down by inventory at work; I’ll still have a few weeks to focus solely on the shindig, though, once school’s over — I know, I’m lucky). Any suggestions for the parents?

Birthday Bash Brainstorming

Mmm, alliteration. Truly a girl’s best friend. And after re-reading this post, parentheses.

So, the monkey’s big birthday (you know, the BIG birthday…the FIRST birthday) is coming up July 13th. Sure, it’s still May, but I live in this little place called reality, where once a child is born, time starts playing horrific tricks on us. He’s practically shaving.

Okay, not shaving, but he’s insanely mobile (mere moments from walking, I swear) and even says a few words. Wait, “oof oof” is totally a word, right? It is when it’s associated with dogs (and, for the time being, cats…they’re the same thing, all the cool kids say). And the time seriously feels like it passed in the blink of an eye. The blink of an exhaustedly blood-shot, tear-filled eye.

To stave off any further waterworks, I’m focusing my emotional energies into creating an awesomesauce birthday party. I’m using Pinterest, oh evil mistress of perfection-flaunting in the face of mere mortals, to glean some ideas that might be fun to try. But, you know, since I live in reality (and am the mother of an active 10 1/2 month old who demands attention; would he prefer to have free reign and complete independence? Sure thing. Do I want to have a child with numerous concussions and cats with mental scars for life? Hellz no.), I’m fully aware that most of these aren’t attainable.

We can dream, can’t we? If I hit 40%, that’ll be doing something.

Oh, and I also live within a reality which involves people who would think me a tad overboard for implementing all this stuff. So, I have to reign it in, too, simply as not to have any heads exploding come July 13th. Not a pretty way to celebrate a fun day. Horrible replacement to fireworks.

As with most things we do, I’d like to keep it green. Recently, I stumbled upon a website that is essentially nothing but a depressing sob-fest (for softies such as myself) displaying hundreds of pictures of animals who have been injured or killed by balloons after being allowed to float away or even just after being thrown away properly. Damn, Hadman loves balloons. That’s okay, social responsibility comes first — and he won’t even know what he missed. Tissue pom-poms or Chinese lanterns, it is, son!

What’s a birthday party without hats? A regular ol’ barbecue, that’s what. So, for those who want to wear one (sign me up, please!), we have a couple of options…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image 9-party-hats on https://megactsout.com

(These are wooden, but you get the idea. I guess they make birthday crowns from newspaper in England. Not only eco-friendly, but classic! Hadley’s not a hat guy, so this is only an “if Mommy wants to get all Martha Stewart and sleep very little” option.)

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image DIY-party-hat on https://megactsout.com

I’ve already purchased some hats (to reuse over time), but dude. Just dude.
That whole site is chock full o’ birthday sweetness.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image Bear-themed-birthday-3 on https://megactsout.com

Like these!!!!! I’m on the hunt for some sans serif cookie cutters. Baking in inevitably 90° weather with an almost-toddler? I’m an idiot. But, if I find an “H” I can use it every year! Y’know. In the sweltering heat. *smacks forehead* Oh, and of COURSE I’m searching for natural (ie fruits and veggies) alternatives to food coloring. Blueberry’s a must, simply because Hads loves ’em.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image Bear-themed-birthday-13 on https://megactsout.com

Or I could always make (or buy?) cake pops. I’ve never had them but I hear they’re the rage. Or, at least that’s what the kiddies are shouting into my Miracle Ear. Could also buy cupcakes (maybe the ones we used for our wedding!!!) and make a smash cake myself for the monkey. Ha. More baking.

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image 2c246329f88d9966c8b673ccd08112ae on https://megactsout.com
Speaking of smash cakes, here’s a lower sugar, all-natural option I’m considering.
Plus, bananas and blueberries = very happy almost-toddler. I did not just type that word. *sigh*

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image Bear-themed-birthday-4 on https://megactsout.com

STILL from the aforementioned party (man, that Beckham’s got swagger), I love just the simple container for napkins, utensils, etc (I was searching Target today for eco-friendly of all of the above; think I’ll have to hit up Peter’s Cornucopia; love that place) and a chalkboard for the menu. Of course, this is the one area that I’ll be considered crazy if I just say “Let’s just do a cheese/cracker (I guess we don’t do “bread”) and veggie tray, some cookies and cupcakes, and maybe some cute sandwiches on baguettes.” Inevitably, there will be mounds of salads — green (specifically for my husband, who eats nothing with mayonnaise), potato, pasta — possibly several types of grilled meats, perhaps a pizza will show up…food’s one thing we do, and do to excess. No point, really.

See, in my mind, which is always grasping for the aesthetically-pleasing, slightly quirky and quasi-hip method, I’d want the money (hell, if no one else wants to pitch in, I’ll do it!) on organic soda (it exists! And in purdy bottles, too!) and a craft beer chilling in a galvanized tub with some homemade lemonade in mason jars, and a display that looks something like this (sans tomato soup and pie)…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image Bear-themed-birthday-11 on https://megactsout.com
Darn you, Beckham.

I am also considering, food-wise, something along the lines of this…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image 53e63a4db2dcf61ca67888abd3ed6a35 on https://megactsout.com
Not that font or description, but the thought behind it. Our kid’s got a pretty refined pallet (read: will eat anything, particularly off floor). Avocados. Extra-sharp cheese. Pasta. A plethora of fruit-and-veg blends including kale or beets. Oh, and pizza…and generally anything that adults eat that we literally need to fight him off to consume. It turns into a scene from Oliver!, I kid you not. “Please, sir…!!!” So, I’m thinking pizza, homemade guac with chips for dippin’ (maybe salsa, too), fruit salad (bananas, kiwi, blueberries, cantaloupe), veggie sticks (the ones in the organic chip aisle; he can’t handle the raw stuff quite yet), and cheese ‘n crackers (or a cheese dip of some sort).

By the way, we’re not doing a theme this year. We considered it for one mad minute, but then realized “Um, he’s one. That’s a theme right there.” (If we wanted to get all dramatic, we could do the “Not yet a man, no longer an infant…” theme. Mustaches abound! Or giraffes. God, the giraffes.) We’re just going with the colors of his nursery, for the most part — y’know, turquoise, orange, green. Good times.

(Maybe one day we’ll do the Mo Willems theme…or the Fred Astaire theme…or whatever the heck else he’s interested in. But, we’ll strive to keep them home-grown events without the rigmarole of inviting an entire freaking grade of kids. We’re not here to show off, just have fun. And Mommy totally has fun with aesthetically-arranged sodas, mkay?)

Speaking of which, one thing that our parties tend to lack is organized fun. It’s a tad tough to do this (same goes for favors) since we don’t really have a plethora of kids coming. There’s Hadley, his cousin Lizzie (who will be 2 months shy of 2 years old *more sobbing*), and MAAAAAYBE one more friend of the family who’s not school-aged yet. Tada. The rest are teenagers *yet more sobbing, I changed their dipes* and a buttload of grown-ups. So, rather than force people to violently whack something whilst wearing a blindfold (never got that), I’m thinkin’ we’ll do a variation of this…

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image 2525a1c876fa86a86ae45cf28b9636be on https://megactsout.com

Halleluia, it wasn’t at Beckham’s party! (No hard feelings, kid. You seem pretty darn cool. Future play date! My child is far less crazy than am I.) Anyhoo, I was thinking more of a card that folks could fill out — one would write something loose like this while the other might have fill-in blanks (what he wants to be, what color his hair will be, what his favorite animal/instrument/food/hobbies/sport, etc.) and folks can do either one. I also considered a photo booth type thingie (just hanging a backdrop and leaving directions and props for photos), but I’m not sure anyone will do it. Party poopers.

Oh, and as far as entertainment goes, it sounds like the hubs hopes to make a video of the kid’s first year. Talk about emotions, gah!

Another “oh, and” — this whole thing is kindly taking place at my mother’s house since she has a perfectly-sized backyard for stretching out, playing, and so forth. I mentioned inviting non-family members (it reaches about 16 or 17 just with close family) and I think I heard smoke come out of her ears through the phone. She nervously mentioned not knowing what to do with folks if it rains, but I brushed it off. (Sure, neither of our houses is big enough to handle that many people. I get the concern, I do.) But, it ain’t no thang. We’ll make it work. I know folks with “pop-ups” and we could always run and grab an extra tarpy tenty thingie or two. I’m on it, Mom!! If you read this. In which case, HI!!!

One last thing (check me out on Pinterest if you really want to subject yourself to more) is probably what I should’ve showed you first: a possible invite.

Okay, forget the “possible” part. I already “borrowed” this idea, downloaded some fonts, and stayed up until almost midnight last night hashing out a similar design (orange rather than red, close-but-no-cigar on the fonts, and a cool black and white tree trunk background). Sorry, Magnus, your time’s up — HADMAN’s in town, and he’s a-takin’ over.

So…think I’m nuts to put so much thought and effort into a one-year-old’s party, or do you get where I’m coming from? Aside from my aesthetic-loving self, it’s about celebrating the life-altering first year of the specialest little guy ever. That’s all. 😉

Look What I Did! …About a Year Ago

Don’t you love when you’re going through the mass of pictures on your camera to delete those fuzzy throw-aways in order to have enough space to take pictures of student projects only to stumble over some gems you forgot you even took a picture of in the first place?

Hmm? Dontchya?

Well, I discovered a few projects that I worked on about one year (or a tad less than that) ago. I was full-blown pregnant, but the warm spring air was demanding that I get out there and do some work. So, this is what I did…

Ick. No amount of spray washing can clean this; I may have to borrow a pressure washer soon (and pray…and pray…and pray that it doesn’t take the finish off the siding). Anyhoo, awhile back, we got a new front door (we have also since put in new windows, all paid for one (or a few) at a time over the last 4 years), which I painted a perfect, cheery red.

(((Insert picture of red door here. Oh, wait. I don’t have one. Wait ’til I’ve finished my spring cleaning, then you’ll get a good eyeful.)))

These shutters have annoyed me since day one. It seems that all of the houses built (or renovated?) on our block at a certain time used the same materials…including this ugly green paint that has faded in the sun. I’ve tried cleaning them, but no amount of scrubbing fixes this blemish.

I pondered. And wondered. And envisioned. And pondered some more. What would go with red? Will I keep the foundation the bluish gray or turn it more of a deep tan? Should I find a nice kelly green, shiny black, or some other bright color to fix up the shutters?

Well, after so much thinking, I just decided to DO. Without further ado…

Shiny black, it is! After a few light coats of Rustoleum Glossy Black (for a buttload of surfaces, even this old crappy metal), here’s our current view…sans the flowers and flag. ‘Cuz, y’know. I did this a year ago. (And, man do I wish I’d gotten a picture of those flowers. They grew like MAD; neighbors still talk about how gorgeous they were. I hardly had to take care of them (seriously, with a newborn? I ain’t Martha), so let’s just call it luck.)

Now, the question is — do I keep the gray bottom? (There are spots in dire need of patching/cleaning.) And if the foundation’s gray, what color do we do the deck and front porch? Because, seriously, the front porch has been begging for something since we moved in, and the treatment we did on the deck last year ain’t cutting it (I like white rungs and stuff, but we did a paint/stain combo on the floor part and it looks streaky and is peeling a tad). Dark gray floor, white everything else? Whatchya think?

Oh, and my dream is to get some prices on a new driveway this summer, too. Just call me Rockafella Skank. Wait, don’t. 🙂

Bathroom Update #3

I know what you’re thinking. When will this %$#@ bathroom be done, already? (Either that, or “Who the $#@% cares about your stupid bathroom?” In which case, I say… “Um. Whoa. Harsh much? Go away. Please and thank you.”)

I’d be with you on the impatience train if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m finally seeing TRANSFORMATION when I look at the space. Sure, it’s messy and incomplete and we grow tired of reminding guests to “ignore our renovation”, but I can finally see the finish line. And, lemme tell ya, that finish line is purdy. Puuuuurrrrdyyyyy.

Here’s what we were last left with (and here‘s the horrific “before”, which doesn’t include the “arts and crafts” style vanity and mirror enclosure…*shivers*):

That color still has me super excited and lovin’ life. (Remember that color since the below pictures don’t do it justice.) But, NOW, we’ve finally laid the tiles to rest.

Rest in peace, Tiles. You weren’t really loved by us, but whomever decided to put you in sure liked ya, so you must’ve served some purpose. Enjoy the great hereafter.

I had originally wanted sheets of wainscotting, but for whatever reason, the guys nixed that and instead went with this plasticy material that comes in sheets about a foot wide that were cut down (and slid into each other). I’m not sure if this was a better choice or not, given how much white plasticy dust-like material we’ve been cleaning up (and this has been a several-Saturdays-in-a-row project, poor guys), but it does look awesome, doesn’t it? There are imperfections, but the house is pretty imperfect, so it’s suited.

You may notice that we still need to caulk/spackle the trim (it’ll actually be done by the time this post goes live; I just couldn’t wait to upload some pictures). Next comes the vinyl floor tiles and quarter round, then details!

Oh, and here’s the “had to find SOME vanity and the style we wanted isn’t available from Lowe’s or Home Depot anymore” vanity…which I actually really like for the space. We were going to go with a white one with a euro styling, but this works fine. It also came with a few dings (the trouble of going with a darker wood option) but it’s nothing some filler can’t take care of…if I match it properly. 😉 And, no, we don’t have the toilet paper holder up yet. Keepin’ it classy.

Almost done!!! Hopefully it won’t take much longer.

Bathroom Update #2

Fully intended to post this Monday; sorry about that! We’ve got a smorgasbord of illness here — croup, sinusitis, bronchitis — take your pick! Set me back a bit.

See? I said I’d get back to you with a bathroom update before another YEAR goes by. Yay, me.

Last you saw, our bathroom was finally de-poopified (in the manner of using some semi-gloss white paint to banish the poop brown accents FOREVER!!!)…

After two coats of a low-VOC semi-gloss paint (the name of which I’m trying to hunt down; that’s the problem with never-ending projects), here’s what we’re left with…

Not a massive change; we’ve still got the ugly mosaic tile, mismatched floor, etc, but things are lookin’ up. Even the hubs is a huge fan of the color and, after the final coat, said that it really makes the space look larger. You might not expect that when you’re moving from white to, well, ANY darker color, but it adds depth to the room that wasn’t there before.

Next up will be a project I’m handing over to the men in my life — beadboard paneling to cover the tiles. Once we’re “ready”, they’ll also take out the sink (forever, we’re replacing it) and the toilet (temporarily) to lay the peel-and-stick tiles on the floor and finish the beadboard on the potty/sink wall. I’ve also heard something regarding painting the shower surround from my stepdad, but I’m not sure exactly what is meant by this plan; the liner seems to be torn as far as my knowledge takes me (which, admittedly, isn’t THAT far; my stepdad’s practically a master plumber). So, we’ll see! Then there’s nitty gritty stuff like the molding for the top of the beadboard, hanging a couple of hooks for towels, finding and hanging a couple of open shelves over the potty and some sort of window treatment, accessorizing (on the hunt for art!), making a mini curtain (you’ll see why)…oh, and hanging my favorite part of the room — a $14.99 shower curtain that adds a huge pop of personality (and even a bit of color).

Pinterest in the Dining Room - image on https://megactsout.com

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the curtain! I’ve hunted FOREVER to find one that I loved and I finally found this at TJ Maxx. All the other curtains were over $20, which isn’t a huge deal, but they didn’t pack THIS much style, I tell ya. I look at it and can already hear my mom telling me that it won’t help sell the house; if that’s the case, I’ll throw the white one back up (it’s not in horrible shape, but it has a few snags from *ahem* a couple of cat claws), but why not surround yourself with things you love? Besides, I texted Dave a picture while he sat in the car with the little buddy and he immediately approved it…which kinda surprised me.

Anyhoo, any projects going on at your joint? How do you feel about bathrooms? Decorate ’em to the hilt or just clean them since your time spent there is so…um…utilitarian? Up for quirky art (we have a friend with a nude print in their 1/2 bath, which fits their personality pretty well) or soothing, subtle stuff?
